Of all gifts, none is more valuable than one benefitting the human spirit, perpetuating a dream. It is the mission of the MEL WANZO SCHOLARSHIP FUND to do that by providing scholarship opportunities for music students at Wayne State University, in Detroit, Michigan.
In March 2003, Mel Wanzo and his wife, Carolyn, created the Mel Wanzo Scholarship Fund, a 501(c)(3) non profit organization. They are passionate about this cause and work tirelessly to ensure its success.
Melvin "Mel" Wanzo, a living legend, embodies the spirit of America's gift to the world - JAZZ. It is through the music's sense of spirituality that Mel continues his dedication to America's recognized pure art form, not only as a performer, but more importantly, as a mentor. Mel has always advised his students of the pursuit of personal excellence, as well as the significance of "keeping the music alive."
Scholarships for talented music students are awarded based on good academic standing, defined as a GPA of 3.0 (or above). Recipients may use the funds for books, tuition, and other educational expenses. (A student may not receive the award more than twice.)
The Mel Wanzo Scholarship Fund continues to nurture students of the music, who will internalize its history and carry the mantle of dedication.
